BEAUTY TIPS April 2010
CHOOSE WISLEY THIS SUMMER OR
 IT MAY CAUSE YOU HARM

Summer will be here before we know it and that means more outdoor activities. Be wise this summer and make wise choices about the sun protection you put on you and your family. Making the wrong choice can cause you more harm than the good. It can defeat the effort you are making by applying sun protection.

Keep in mind that an SPF of 55 – 100 only blocks 1-2% more UVB radiation than an SPF 30, plus they are not required to have UVA protection. An SPF 30 is required to contain 2-3 times more active ingredients.

Many sunscreens contain nano-scale ingredients that raise potential concerns. A study at the University of California found ultraviolet filters in sunscreens can actually generate compounds that attack skin cells, in addition to generating free radicals or reactive oxygen species. Some sunscreens are absorbed into the blood and raise safety concerns. Reviews of technical literature by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) show that some sunscreens are linked to toxic effects. Some sunscreens release skin-damaging free radicals in sunlight; some can disrupt our hormone systems. Several are linked to allergic reactions, and others may build up in the body or the environment. The FDA has not established strict standards of sunscreen ingredients that thoroughly examine these effects.

UVA rays cause aging and penetrate the skin deeper than the UVB rays. UVB rays contribute to premature wrinkling and aging; they cause burning and inflammation, cataracts and over time causes skin cancer and can even alter the immune system. UVC rays causes cancer and are the most powerful and harmful. They are normally filtered out by the ozone layer.

Micronized and nano-scale zinc oxide and titanium dioxide in sunscreen provide a strong UVA protection. Repeated studies have found that these two ingredients do not penetrate healthy skin and indicate that consumer’s exposure would be minimal.   Powders and spray sunscreens with nano-scale ingredients raise greater concerns, since particles might be more easily absorbed through the lungs than the skin.
